- <p> DIED. Robert Anderson, 79, Texas lawyer and oilman who
- served as Dwight Eisenhower's Navy Secretary from 1953 to 1954
- and Treasury Secretary from 1957 to 1961; in New York City. Ike
- urged Anderson to be his running mate in 1956 and to try for the
- G.O.P. presidential nomination in 1960. Citing his political
- inexperience, Anderson refused both times. His life turned
- upside down in the 1980s, when he pleaded guilty to charges of
- tax evasion and operating an illegal offshore bank in the West
- Indies. He served one month in prison.
