  14. <p>    DIED. Robert Anderson, 79, Texas lawyer and oilman who
  15. served as Dwight Eisenhower's Navy Secretary from 1953 to 1954
  16. and Treasury Secretary from 1957 to 1961; in New York City. Ike
  17. urged Anderson to be his running mate in 1956 and to try for the
  18. G.O.P. presidential nomination in 1960. Citing his political
  19. inexperience, Anderson refused both times. His life turned
  20. upside down in the 1980s, when he pleaded guilty to charges of
  21. tax evasion and operating an illegal offshore bank in the West
  22. Indies. He served one month in prison.
